Osteoporosis Information Sheet
This information is provided by the Real Canadian Superstore DRUGStore Pharmacy.
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by deterioration of bone tissue, which leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. Approximately 1.4 million Canadians suffer from osteoporosis. One in every four Canadian women over the age of 50 will develop osteoporosis. Preventing osteoporosis begins with building strong bones early in life.
Milk and milk products are the best source of calcium and vitamin D. If you don't drink milk, try calcium-fortified orange juice, soy beverage or fish product containing bones (such as canned salmon and sardines). Not many adults consume the required 4-5 servings of milk per day, so it's important to encourage increased intake through supplements. Women should also understand that calcium intake is important to prevent further bone loss, but it will not reverse established osteoporosis and often prescription medications need to be used.
Calcium is a key element in so many of our body's functions and it is imperative to get adequate amounts for more than just bone health.
- Calcium maintains normal heartbeat and regulates blood pressure.
- Calcium reduces the risk of colorectal polyps.
- Calcium is important for normal blood clotting.
- Calcium is required for nerve conduction.
Vitamin D increases calcium absorption by as much as 30 to 80%. Sunshine is our main source of vitamin D. However, in Canada, for about 6 months of the year, the sun does not generate sufficient vitamin D to meet our daily requirements. While wearing sunscreen protects your skin, it blocks vitamin D.
In addition to making sure we get enough calcium and vitamin D, we can also help keep our bones strong by being physically active. Physical activity increases the force on bones and they respond by increasing in mass. The more bones mass we have the less fragile our bones will be. Weight-bearing exercises such as walking, provide the most benefit.
